Youth Advisory Board with Prince William

In addition to our services, we support and upskill young people to guide our organisation through our Youth Voice programme.

As The Mix is a service for Young People, and 60% of Shout texters are under 25, it’s essential that we engage young people to keep our work relevant and useful.

We focus on young people by:

  • Promoting youth voice throughout every aspect of the organisation
  • Involving young people in shaping our work, through co-designs and consultation sessions.
  • Supporting young people to create content, sharing their lived experiences
  • Providing training opportunities to upskill young people
  • Providing demographic information on the young people that engage with us

We know that young people are all different, so we offer options and choices for how young people can get involved with our work, based on their needs.

We have committees and steering groups, which are opportunities to shape projects and different areas of our work over a longer period. These committees meet once a month and do some work in-between meetings.

Through our Opportunity Network we also offer a wide range of one-off opportunities, which gives the opportunity to shape our work as we go. Young people can come to as many or as few of these as they like.

Our Youth Voice groups:

We have a number of Youth Voice groups that work to support different organisational goals.

Youth Advisory Board

These young people work with our board of trustees and senior management team to help set the direction of the charity.

Communications Committee

Our amazing Communications Committee helps us produce youth-led articles and videos on our social platforms, as well as co-designing seasonal campaigns.

Services Innovator Committee

Made up of young people with experiences of using digital services, the Services Innovator Committee shapes all our digital services with a particular focus on counselling, safeguarding, and our upcoming Peer Chat Service.

Community Connectors

The genius behind our online community, you will see our Community Connectors doing everything from shaping guidelines to planning out our Christmas activities.

Pod Squad

After launching the Mix Six podcast, we’re training young people in writing, editing, and public speaking, with the aim for it to be entirely Youth Led .

Opportunity Network

For those who don’t want to commit long-term, we offer time-limited projects through our Opportunity Network. This could range from longer projects, such as helping us co-design our self-paced learning modules, to one-off training sessions for job-seeking and design.

A cross-organisational function

Our Youth Voice Team uses an Innovative Matrix structure, where we have staff leads based in Counselling, Marketing, Community, Safeguarding, and Peer Chat give one day a week of their time to our Youth Voice work, to ensure that we get a steady stream of interaction and feedback for every part of The Mix’s services.

We participate in this Youth Voice work not only because of our legal obligations under Article 12 of the UN convention of the Rights of the Child, but also because we recognise the expertise of Young People. They are experts in their own right, and it’s our responsibility and privilege to work with them to improve our offering for young people.

As well as offering a range of services, our Youth Voice offers a strengths-based approach that helps young people develop skills, gain confidence, and contribute meaningfully to improving outcomes for others.
