Mental Health Innovations (MHI) is committed to minimising its environmental impact and embedding sustainability into every aspect of its work. We recognise that protecting the environment is vital to the wellbeing of our communities and aligns closely with our mission to support better mental health for all.

Reflecting the UK ambition to achieve net zero by 2050, MHI is taking action to reduce its carbon footprint, build climate resilience, and lead by example as a responsible charitable sector organisation.

Our three key priorities

  • Empathy_orange

    Reducing our environmental impact

By managing our operations to cut emissions, minimise waste, and use resources efficiently.

  • Collaborative_orange

    Supporting our community’s wellbeing

By recognising and addressing the mental health impacts of climate change.

  • courage_orange

    Championing sustainable leadership

By using our influence to promote positive environmental and social behaviours.

To deliver on these priorities, MHI will:

  • Maintain an environmental risk log with senior management and trustee oversight to ensure strong governance.
  • Implement a measurable Carbon Reduction Plan, reporting on direct and indirect emissions without reliance on offsetting.
  • Work towards and achieve ISO 14001 certification, ensuring continuous environmental improvement.
  • Align sustainability goals with our MHI 2026 - 2030 Strategy, engaging staff and volunteers at every level.

Our practical actions include:

  • Reducing energy and water consumption and improving the efficiency of our organisation and premises.
  • Managing waste responsibly through reduction, reuse, recycling, and compliance with Simpler Recycling Legislation (2025).
  • Prioritising sustainable procurement and ethical suppliers.
  • Encouraging sustainable travel through active transport, car sharing, and low-emission vehicles.
  • Empowering staff through training upon induction
