Innovative project to deliver crisis support to people in prison enables prisoners to access 24/7 mental health support via the Shout messaging service, facilitated by In Cell technology partner Unify.
Since the pilot launched at HMP Thameside in April 2023, Shout has taken 800 conversations with prisoners reaching out for support with their mental health. While people normally access Shout via mobile phone, the Serco pilot project gives prisoners a device that allows them to confidentially and anonymously message the service from inside their cell.
The service was developed in consultation with prisoners and also opens doors to other self-care strategies such as healthcare information, calculator and work book applications. While Shout's tried-and-tested training model remains robust in supporting anyone in crisis, Shout Volunteers have also been provided with specific resources and guidance to be able to support texters as part of this project.

Poor mental health is exceptionally common in prison, with 45% of adult inmates experiencing anxiety or depression and nine out of ten prisoners having at least one mental health or substance misuse problem*. Since launch, the pilot has seen prisoners reaching out for support across a range of issues including stress and/or anxiety (38%), depression (25%), suicidal thoughts and ideation (15%), isolation and loneliness (15%) and relationships (15%). 71% of those utilising the service report that they found their conversation to be helpful.
